He plans a weekend away; she wanted to hear one sincere sentence. She writes him a long card; he wanted her to just sit close on the couch. Two people, both giving generously — both missing.

The pattern is almost universal: we express love in the language we most want to receive. It feels like generosity, but it's a guess — and after a few years, an expensive one.
